Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton)
There was no skimping or compromising this time around, though. Soprano Miriam Gauci’s bravura performance in the title role of the fatally credulous ex-geisha Cio-Cio-San was matched by tenor Zoran Todorovich’s almost heroic characterisation of the faithless Pinkerton, and the rest of the cast, down to the smallest roles, was without any weak links. As Pinkerton, Todorovich deployed his dark, sinewy tenor to suberb effect – effortlessly reaching the high notes in “Dovunque al mondo” and drawing wrenching picture of remorse in the final “Addio, fiorito asil.”

His timbre is affected by firmer brilliance, which shows to advantage not only in forte, Todorovich succeeds in projecting the entire dynamic spectrum of his part. And when he reaches the C sharp two octaves above the middle C during his duet with Margarete, the audience fully experience the extremity of Berlioz’s work.
